Zürcher Nachrichten - Grammy-Winning Jazz Vocalist Cassandra Wilson Dies at 70

Cassandra Wilson, a two-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist whose recordings blended jazz with blues, folk, R&B, pop and country, has died at 70. She died in Jackson, Mississippi, the city where she was born and where her musical education began.

Born Dec. 4, 1955, Wilson started studying music as a child, learning piano and clarinet before developing as a singer. She performed while attending college and later moved to New York City in the 1980s, where she became associated with saxophonist Steve Coleman and the M-Base Collective, a group of musicians known for experimental approaches to rhythm, improvisation and composition.

Wilson released her early recordings during the 1980s and eventually signed with Blue Note Records. Her 1993 album Blue Light ’Til Dawn became a major turning point, pairing jazz interpretation with songs and influences drawn from outside the standard jazz repertoire. The record helped establish the style that would define much of her later work.

Her album New Moon Daughter brought her the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997. She later won another Grammy for Loverly, receiving the Best Jazz Vocal Album award in 2009. Across her career she earned four Grammy nominations.

Wilson’s repertoire regularly crossed genre boundaries. She reinterpreted material associated with artists including Bob Dylan and Neil Young and collaborated with musicians from jazz and popular music. Her low, textured voice and restrained phrasing became central to a body of work that emphasized atmosphere and reinterpretation rather than conventional vocal-jazz formulas.

In 2015, Wilson released Coming Forth by Day, an album and concert project created around the centennial of Billie Holiday’s birth. It became her final studio album and reflected the long influence of Holiday on Wilson’s approach to storytelling and interpretation.

Her contributions were recognized beyond the recording industry. The National Endowment for the Arts named Wilson an NEA Jazz Master in 2022, one of the United States’ highest honors for jazz musicians. Time magazine had earlier described her as America’s best singer in 2001.

Following news of her death, musicians and public officials paid tribute to her influence. Pianist and bandleader Jon Batiste was among those honoring her work, while Jackson Mayor John Horhn praised a performer closely associated with the cultural life of her hometown.

Wilson leaves a catalog that helped broaden the boundaries of contemporary vocal jazz by placing blues, folk traditions, popular songwriting and experimental ideas within the same musical language.
